Desertification and sand dune migration studies around Tanot in Thar desert, Jaisalmer District, Rajasthan

Tanot is a town in the northwestern part of Thar desert, -- Great Indian Desert – which is an arid region in the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent that covers an area of 200,000 km2 in India and Pakistan. In the area around Tanot the important geomorphologic units identified include featureless sand sheet and different varieties of sand dunes e.g., longitudinal, transverse, crescentic or barchan, parabolic. As deserts continue to expand, sand dunes pose an increasing risk to the built environment: swallowing up roads and houses whole as they engulf the land. The study will be orienting the spatio-temporal patterns of dune migration in the area around Tanot of Thar desert with optical remote sensing techniques which can help to understand aeolian phenomena and mitigate sand-dust disasters.
