Building for Change

As infrastructure drives rapid building development in cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and other urban areas, myopic development driven by initial euphoria, reactionary market trends, proximity-based valuations, and ad hoc codes designed to 'enable growth' drive the design of buildings that somehow seem extinct already, while sold as 'future ready'.

The continued human use of buildings is the ultimate measure of sustain - ability in architecture. Expanding the discourse on adaptability to encompass both continuity and change reflects the architectural embodiment of resilience.

The Studio aims to develop a pedagogy using ideas of resilience and future change to learn the inherent logics of building systems, their architectural arrangement, and the resulting cultural value over the long term.

The studio begins with a short exercise focused on the adaptive reuse of an iconic structure in disrepair, situated in a strategic urban location to expose potentials & problems of adaptability. This will lead to the main project, to develop a design within the given framework of constraints whose main focus will be to design organizational systems that integrate architectonic, environmental, and structural elements into high-performing, long-lasting buildings capable of adapting to future environmental, spatial, and human conditions.
