Metamorphosis : An Ecological Resurgence of Brahmapuram

Ecological Regeneration of Brahmapuram Landfill Site
Located on the outskirts of Kochi, Kerala, Brahmapuram has long served as the city’s primary waste dumping ground, resulting in extensive environmental degradation. Unregulated disposal of municipal and industrial waste, combined with untreated sewage and toxic leachate, has led to severe contamination of soil and water, posing threats to ecosystems, biodiversity, and public health. This project proposes the ecological restoration of the Brahmapuram landfill into a self-sustaining, resilient landscape. The intervention includes soil and water remediation using native vegetation, the creation of wetland-based treatment systems, and the incorporation of waste-to-energy and resource recovery methods. The aim is to transform the polluted site into a thriving ecological habitat that supports biodiversity, improves environmental quality, and serves as a model for sustainable land reclamation in urban India.
