Translating the Unbuilt: From Coventry to Ahmedabad

This project reimagines Alison and Peter Smithson's unbuilt Coventry Cathedral within the grounds beside the St. Xavier's High School, Ahmedabad.

A vast semi-open plaza accommodates smaller functional volumes made of exposed RCC. The anticlastic roof of PTFE coated glass fabric supported by mild steel space frame and the corten steel louvers acting as the skin of this Cathedral, are its main features. A play of light and shadow is created by the translucent fabric roof and the louver skin.

The design blends light, materiality and space to evoke a profound sense of spirituality adapting Smithsons' vision to local context.
