Living Modernism: Reinterpreting Doshi’s Ethos

Tagore Hall, once a cultural landmark along the Sabarmati River, now stands spatially and socially disconnected from Ahmedabad’s urban fabric. Though its modernist design remains architecturally significant, the hall is used solely as an auditorium, leaving the rest of the site and campus underutilized. Understanding B.V. Doshi’s design evolution—rooted in contextual and participatory principles—reveals opportunities for other activities. By introducing smaller, flexible cultural units and activating the surrounding open spaces, the site can become a dynamic public realm. Reconnecting it with the riverfront and its neighborhood can restore its relevance while preserving its modern heritage.
