After conducting detailed existing scenario analysis and on-ground surveys, this project proposes improvements to enhance walkability and cyclist safety in Surat. Key interventions include widening footpaths in priority areas such as RTC corridors, accident-prone zones, and old city markets. Segregated cycle tracks are planned along major industrial routes to protect cyclists. Unsafe junctions will be redesigned with pedestrian crossings, traffic calming measures, and better signage. High-footfall retail and heritage zones will be converted into pedestrian-only areas with shaded walkways, smart mobility features, and controlled vehicle access. The project also introduces a policy to manage footpath encroachments and create structured vending zones. Smart apps and digital systems will support seamless first- and last-mile connectivity. Phased implementation aims to upgrade 384 km of footpaths by 2035. The proposal supports a safer, more inclusive, and sustainable transport network for Surat.
