Reimagining Urban Villages for Inclusive Living

The project repositions urban villages (gamtals) like Paldi and Kochrab as strategic, inclusive housing anchors within Ahmedabad’s urban core. Through spatial analysis, community engagement, and policy review, it reveals how their transformation is hindered despite centrality and housing potential. A new planning model grounded in Local Area Planning, minimum displacement, and flexible built-form guidelines demonstrates how gamtals can deliver affordable housing, preserve cultural identity, and improve livability. The project offers a replicable toolkit to formalize gamtals, close policy-design gaps, and scale sustainable redevelopment citywide.
