URBAN FLOOD ANALYSIS AND VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT FOR BHUBANESHWAR AND SURAT
The project, Climate Risk and Road Safety Risk Assessment of Bhubaneshwar and Surat, addresses critical environmental and safety challenges in these urban centers. Bhubaneshwar has experienced frequent flooding, with six flood years in a decade, rising heatwave days, and significant air pollution issues, with 45% and 37% of days exceeding PM10 standards in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Similarly, Surat faces escalating flood frequency, nearly doubling over the last century, and severe impacts of air pollution, contributing to 2,914 premature deaths in 2019. In 2024, heat stress claimed 10 lives, underscoring urgent climate adaptation and risk mitigation needs in these cities.
