Earthen Nest - Rammed Earth

The Earthen Nest is a display space designed for Craftroots, an initiative by Gramshree Trust in Ahmedabad that supports and showcases traditional Indian crafts. The project aims to create a space that respects and reflects the cultural and material heritage of the region, while offering a functional and inviting environment for artisans and visitors. The design includes a minimum of 30 sq.m of enclosed display area and 50 sq.m of semi-open display space. At its core, the structure uses rammed earth as the primary material, chosen for its eco-friendly properties, thermal insulation, and aesthetic connection to the land. Its natural tones and textures create a grounded, earthy feel that enhances the experience of the crafts on display. Timber is used for the roof trusses, adding warmth and a handcrafted character. Concrete provides strength in the beams and foundation, while glass on the façade allows natural light to flood the interiors, improving visibility and establishing a visual link to the outdoors. The Earthen Nest stands as a symbolic shelter — a space where traditional crafts are not only displayed but celebrated, embodying harmony between material, function, and cultural identity.
