CFP004

UAR20142

The first semester focused on developing drawing and representation skills. Continuing in a similar vein, during the second semester, the CFP Studio component focuses on building analytical abilities. Exercises like mapping and data representation engage with on-ground reality, requiring that the students develop their ability to observe, collect data and analyse it, as well as communicate and represent it meaningfully; building elements and materials allows for initial familiarization with these, theoretically as well as through observation of built spaces around; while making and testing structures uses hands-on experience to enable conceptual understanding. Technical drawing II builds on the skills imbibed initially and develops them towards further complexity. All the exercises find their culmination in tackling a design problem, which brings together the skills and abilities while introducing the students for the first time to the design process. These skills will be put to use during L2 studios, and will be discussed in their relevance to the professional practice that designers, architects and urban planners engage in.

Making and Testing Structures 1- A cube is made by joining reed sticks through lashing and is then tested for its strength and durability.

Making and Testing Structures 2- A rectified model is made with the same material and techniques, but with improvised bracings and is then tested for its strength.

Technical Drawing 1- The plans, elevation, section as well as wall sections of my house are drawn manually to scale.

Technical Drawing 2- The plans, elevation, section as well as wall sections of my house are drawn manually to scale.

Mapping and Data Representation- The sheet maps my go-to route in my neighbourhood highlighting the route and the shops I encounter in between my and my friend's house.

Tackling a Design Problem 1- The sheet shows the hand rendered isometric view of my final design, followed my the site study and the site plan.

Tackling a Design Problem 2- The plan, elevation and sections of the final design are drafted on autoCAD and later rendered digitally.

Tackling a Design Problem 3- The sheet contains the process followed during the course of the exercise.

Sketching- Mediums such are charcoal, watercolours and pencil colours are used in the rendering of the above drawings.

Digital Representation- The shelters are built and rendered from scratch on softwares such as ArchiCAD and Sketchup.
