Foundation Studio (II), within the CEPT Foundation Programme continues to build upon the skills acquired during the first semester, adding abilities to use digital media in representation; to make models; to understand the assembly of built form through its building elements, materials and structures; to be able to draft architectural and topographical drawings: and eventually leads to bringing the skills and abilities together to tackle a design problem.

Technical Drawing II dealt with studying a building's built form; in this case, the GIDC Bhavan. Measuring various elements of the building, understanding how different elements interact with each other and the function they have in holding together the structure was part of this exercise. Based on our study, we formulated building plans, sections and a 1:20 scale section model of the same

Using reed sticks, thread and pins, a structure based on the concept of cantilever plate was built with the objective being that the plate should sustain a weight of about 8-10 Kgs. Methods of lashing and joineries were explored to make the structure as stable and strong as possible

The final phase of the testing structures included attaching it on a wooden base plate and laying bricks on top one after the other till there was structural failure

An interesting exercise that involved putting together wood and metal together using nothing but joineries and fixation hardware elements was "Joining Elements". Within a virtual framework of a cube, a design was formulated to facilitate the play of wood to wood, metal to metal and wood to metal joineries.

Different joineries based on traditional techniques and few modern day hardwares put together the structure. In the process of cutting out or preparing each element, various tools and machineries were handled.

A field trip to Hunnarshala at Bhuj guided us through the process of turning soil into a standing structure. The process included testing soil, getting acquainted with various tools used to process and build, soil to bricks to masonry of bricks

Various structures like rammed earth wall, arches, domes, coursed and uncoursed masonry were explored as a group of students

Designing a workspace for a wooden toy maker based in Goa, beside a sea cliff was part of this exercise. Keeping in mind the climatic factors, user experience and requirements was all part of the process.

The design primarily focuses on creating a homely atmosphere for a client, as a part of which the design was inspired by local Goan architecture and elements of design were adopted for the same.

Digital Representation II explored softwares like Sketchup and Archicad, using which different tools, methods and digital design options were realised
