The CEPT Foundation Programme studio is an introduction for students fresh out of school to the rigor and work habits required by an undergraduate degree at CEPT University. The studio is conceptualized as a series of sequentially planned exercises, through which students develop skills and abilities, which are then deployed to address increasingly complex problems falling in four broad categories: visualize and draw, make and learn, anayse and interpret and conceptualise and represent. The exercises are designed to provide foundational skills for students across disciplines at CEPT, between which they maintain a balance. They also reflect an understanding that at the foundation level, these skills overlap to a large extent, and a varied array is of benefit to all students. The studio is taught through intensive 1–2 week long modules, focusing on a particular skill or ability, and a process that emphasizes ongoing feedback in addition to expert faculty lectures.

Exploring different options to work on as a field studio project in Gandhi ashram at Sabarmati, researching on the origin, working principle and types of spinning wheels (charkha), relation between Gandhiji and the charkha, studying and learning about the collection of charkhas exhibited in the ashram as well as in the Charkha museum, first set up by Dr. Tridip Suhrud *This project was taken up instead of the field studio at Varanasi.

Technically hand drafted, these drawings show different views of Peti charkha and Bardoli charkha - the 2 broad categories of charkha

Conducting in-depth research and analysing information gathered to frame opportunity to develop design, generating concepts in response to the design brief and developing designs through iterations, creating prototypes at various levels of fidelity

Discussing the importance of usability, functionality, aesthetics and user experience in our design, reviewing and refining final designs based on constructive feedback

Investigating and studying landscape of an urban environment (Sabarmati Riverfront Park) and representing them on a map using software for data representation, collecting and analysing data to make base map and infographics

Understanding basic concepts of physics, states of stress and its behaviour in the surroundings, designing a frame structure, resolving junctions and joinery considering distribution and direction of load transfer as well as material used (reed sticks), testing and identifying reasons for structural failure and providing rectifications

Imagining/visualizing and drawing a scenario using text as a tool, articulating text and translating it into a graphical representation

Exploring possibilities of different types of joinery for same and different materials, designing an assemblage with an understanding of overall composition and joineries, making the assemblage by carrying out operations like cutting, drilling, bending, riveting, threading, screwing and sanding/filing with metal and wood using hand and power tools at the workshop, estimating the cost of the assemblage built

Identifying and describing different stages and key components of any design process, utilising solar panels and motorised system to harness electrical energy while building a car and introduction to laser cutting & 3D printing
