The Monsoon Semester of the CEPT Foundation Programme inculcates foundational design skills through sequential exercises focused on perfecting freehand and perspective drawing, visualizing and drawing complex compositions. Students learn to make technical drawings using orthographic projections, surface development and exploded views of complex objects; develop the skill of estimating sizes and begin to engage with anthropometrics. Ordering principles, colour theory, imaginative drawing and deciphering and interpreting styles help them develop more complex skills. Alongside, parallel exercises focus on describing objects and presenting their own work in writing, while guest speaker lectures offer exposure to other disciplines.

SUBTRACTING SOLIDS: Drawing straight lines to making complex compositions and subtractions form object orientations and imagination skills. Before reaching to this stage a set of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines were practiced free handed. Overlapping played a major role in the development of Assemblage. Assemblage was made in two point perspective and was finalize with microns.

RENDERED COMPOSITION: Rendering is one of the skills which remains throughout in a designer’s journey. Rendering is one of the ways to show light and shadow prominently. Here the method used for rendering is called Tippling, which is done in the composition. Tippling simply means showing light and shadow with the help of tiny dots. Intensity varies according to the shadow varies. This type of rendering takes good amount of time and should be done patiently to get proper results. For cube and cuboids in the composition it simply has three shades dark, medium and light. But for the curved surfaces like cylinder and cone the shadow gradually goes to light leaving many shaded behind. Hand controlling is one of the skills which one can learn through this rendering process.

CUBOIDS IN PERSPECTIVE: Perspective is one of the concepts which is used in every conceptual diagrams/drawings. Following page includes two point perspective of the matchbox composition. Projection lines from the composition which is called the Picture Plane are made to draw it in a 3 D form. With the help of projection lines and lines coming from the Right and left vanishing points, composition was made. All the projection lines are kept light grey so they don’t hinder the composition.

A LOOK INTO CUBOIDAL SUBTRACTIONS: The figure consists of an object composition of different colour match boxes placed touching each other along the edges with different cuboidal subtraction being made out of every box. Grey projection lines are the core for the subtractions which helps to reinterpret the cutouts in different views of the composition. Continuous lines are used to show front and dotted lines to show hidden subtraction behind the cuboids and also help one to understand different types of subtractions and designing aspects. The whole sheet with these cuboidal subtractions shows how even a slightest difference can make a boring composition into something learning and eye catching.

DISMANTLING THE OBJECT: The figure consists of an exploded view of a three pin plug. Every part of the plug being dismantled from its core and then arranged in the manner, showing how all parts can be placed together. This shows the basic fundamentals of arrangement and mechanism of the Plug. Whole A1 sheet is an assemblage of different A3 sheets and then traced on a bigger one to get an idea of the whole process. Considering the overall size of the object it is drawn in an isometric view for better perception, along with that sheet gives proper names to all parts followed by their individual explanation written in a vertical format which can be easily readable. Overall this process enlightens the mechanism and the basic fundamentals of a Three-pin plug.

PIXELATING MANUALLY: Color theory is one of the important topics in a designer’s life. Understanding of colors and mixing techniques of colors are quite important. Sheet here is a pixelating of a image placed below done manually. This entire process include making different colors through mixing them. Filling small boxes needed quite concentration. This process improved color management and hand control on brushes.

COLOURED COLLAGE: The sheet containing 13 different bold colors which represents Amrita Sherr Gill’s work which is feminism, with the use of bold and powerful colors like red and browns along with the prototype of female parts and their fragility. While producing this sheet one can understand how colors play a very important role in representing words through them. Understanding one's work and conveying it through color is a learning outcome. This sheet demonstrates that a designer one must understand another person's thoughts and give a relatable outcome.

COMPOSED POSTER: Composing different parts of the object to composing different aspects in a poster along with a sense of colors is a skill which is developed through the journey, following that the poster shown here talks about the Book release event of famous architect Rem Koolhaas on one of his own books, Junk Space. The placement of the headings along with the sketch and information of the event are composed line wise below each other which is easily readable from a far distance and at the same time is appealing and eye-catching. The name of the book is written in white color with a dark background and at the center making it visible from far distance. Overall it helps one to develop composing skills along with color management.

RENDERED SKETCHES: Sketching is one of the skills which as a designer is used in every path. Rendering is also one of the skills which runs hand in hand with sketches. The sketches shown here are free hand as well as perspectives. Each sketch is fully rendered showing all the material property with needed amount of strokes and material hatching. One of the sketch is done digitally with the help of digital tools such as brushes and smudgers. Hand control and pressure on strokes, both in manual and digital is one of the skills learned during sketching period.
