The Monsoon semester focuses on equipping students with various techniques to visualise, draw and represent. The students also start to engage with existing buildings to identify various building elements, basic construction materials and methods. They practise and work intensively to perfect their freehand drawing and perspective drawing, to visualize and draw complex compositions. They also learn to make technical drawings using orthographic projections, surface development and the exploded view of a complex object. A series of exercises in sketching will enable the students to sketch freely in order to observe, document, imagine and improvise. The exercise on gauging sizes will develop the habit of estimating sizes using one’s body and through it the students will begin to engage with the concept of anthropometrics. Through the exercise on building elements and materials the students will start to engage with existing buildings to decipher their building elements and materials and understand the sequence of construction. In the last exercise the students will go through the process of documenting an existing building and making a set of architectural drawings.

The sheet on the left shows the isometric exploded view of a roller skate. All the individual parts have been hand-drafted. They have also been labelled and their functions have been explained.

The three images show the plan and the sections of the bathroom in my house. All the measurements were gauged using different techniques. The dimensions written with red ink are the critical dimensions and the ones written with pencil are the actual dimensions.

These images show the plan and sections of the bedroom in my house. The gauged dimensions, critical dimensions and actual dimensions have been written with black ink, red ink and pencil respectively.

The first image is a hand-drafted wall section of the balcony in my house. The second image shows the relief model of the same wall section. In the model, different boards and papers have been used to show the different materials.

Various colour schemes have been used in the different compositions.

These images show various forms and compositions that have been drawn without using any tools.

The first image is the hand-drafted orthographic projection of the matchbox composition. The image at the bottom left shows the surface development of a hexagonal prism with a hinged truncation. The two images at the bottom right show the 3D model of the same.

The first two images show different rules of composition. The third image shows the different rules of organization that are seen in the plan of the Kaufmann house (Fallingwater) by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The first image is the base map of my neighbourhood. It has been drafted using AutoCAD. The second image is the graphical representation of the various attributes and human activities that take place in my neighbourhood.

The images show various sketches made using different mediums like soft pastel, charcoal and sign pen.
