The Monsoon semester focuses on equipping students with various techniques to visualise, draw and represent. The students also start to engage with existing buildings to identify various building elements, basic construction materials and methods. They practise and work intensively to perfect their freehand drawing and perspective drawing, to visualize and draw complex compositions. They also learn to make technical drawings using orthographic projections, surface development and the exploded view of a complex object. A series of exercises in sketching will enable the students to sketch freely in order to observe, document, imagine and improvise. The exercise on gauging sizes will develop the habit of estimating sizes using one’s body and through it the students will begin to engage with the concept of anthropometrics. Through the exercise on building elements and materials the students will start to engage with existing buildings to decipher their building elements and materials and understand the sequence of construction. In the last exercise the students will go through the process of documenting an existing building and making a set of architectural drawings.

We learnt the use of different mediums in both live and still sketching environments.

Lines, shapes, forms, subtracted forms and assemblages freehand, without the use of any tools.

With technical drawing, we learned how to accurately draft construction drawings, surface developments of subtracted solids and models for the same.

As part of the technical drawing, we also learnt how to project one point and two point perspective drawings from a plan.

The drawing skills learnt earlier were applied in here to make exploded drawings of mechanical handheld objects, and at the same time understanding how they work.

Gauging is a very essential skill that we develop while gauging our rooms, furniture and hand held objects.

We discussed the various aspects of construction from material to the structure of the buildings. We brought it to use by making sectional drawings of our homes and a detailed model of the same.

Aspects of colour that effect our psyche and other attributes of colour were discussed in details. A mood board was made and colour pallets were made with the knowledge gained.

Principles of ordering elements and principles of design were extensively discussed and this was tested by deciphering plans of various projects.

Data collection and representation skills were the focus of this module where we collected relevant data about our neighborhood in an urban setting and mapped them over an accurately drafted base map.
