The Monsoon semester focuses on equipping students with various techniques to visualise, draw and represent. The students also start to engage with existing buildings to identify various building elements, basic construction materials and methods. They practise and work intensively to perfect their freehand drawing and perspective drawing, to visualize and draw complex compositions. They also learn to make technical drawings using orthographic projections, surface development and the exploded view of a complex object. A series of exercises in sketching will enable the students to sketch freely in order to observe, document, imagine and improvise. The exercise on gauging sizes will develop the habit of estimating sizes using one’s body and through it the students will begin to engage with the concept of anthropometrics. Through the exercise on building elements and materials the students will start to engage with existing buildings to decipher their building elements and materials and understand the sequence of construction. In the last exercise the students will go through the process of documenting an existing building and making a set of architectural drawings.

The slide here shows a composition of forms in one point perspective made freehand and the second image shows the same composition coloured digitally in an analogous colour scheme.

The image on the top right, when pixelated would look like the hand-painted drawing shown above. The drawing is made on an A4 size paper and each pixel is a square of 1cmx1cm, painted with poster colours.

The slide shows a collage representing the style of architecture of the legendary architect- B.V.Doshi. It portrays the particular elements, materials and colours used by him.

The images on the top are the sketches of a view in two different mediums- charcoal and pen, while the images on the bottom are that of a bunch of leaves made with charcoal and ink and kitta respectively. The exercise helped in understanding the rendering techniques using different mediums for the same object.

The image on top shows the sketch of a chair if it was left neglected in a closed room for ten years. The image on the bottom right is the sketch of the present condition of the chair. The images on bottom left show the blown up sketches of details of the chair.

The slide shows the entire exploded view of the glass door lock in isometry with the labelling and functions of each part.

The image on the top displays different views of a matchbox composition, drawn with the help of a model of the same. It represents all the aspects of a 3D object on a 2D surface using different types of lines, line weights and colours. The image on the bottom is that of surface development of a frustum of a cone.

The slide shows a section drawing of a street. The drawing has been made by gauging all the distances and sizes by using my body as a scale.

The image on the left is the wall section showing the ground and the first floor of my building. Various building elements and their respective materials have been labelled along the sides. The image on the right is a model of the wall section in which different materials have been indicated using different coloured sheets.

The slide shows the map of my neighbourhood. The three maps on the top indicate the map of traffic and footfall at different times of the day. The map on the bottom shows the ages of the buildings using the coloured key, and also shows the activities around the neighbourhood using small quick sketches.
