Impact of Urban Regeneration Projects in Sacred-Historic Precincts of India A Case of The Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, Varanasi.

The study is a part of the broader research initiative undertaken by the Centre for Architecture and Urbanism, CEPT University, evaluating multiple urban regeneration projects across India. The research focuses on the Impact of Urban Regeneration Projects in Sacred-Historic Precincts on their immediate context. It looks at developing a method to analyze this impact. This method shall be explored through the case study approach. In the selected case of The Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor Project , this research explores the following specific question; While creating a strong, continuous physical and visual axis between the Kashi Temple and the Ghat, Whether the Kashi Corridor Project disrupted or strengthened the lateral connectivity that existed and integrated the precinct with the rest of the city? How has the project affected the adjoining streets physically? Have these changes influenced the nature of activities and the active, vibrant nature of the spaces? This research shall use a combination of Space syntax theory (Using isovist analysis) alongside empirical study of select parameters on site to understand the impact of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor Project on its immediate context.
