The environment is a complex system within which our body is interwoven and committed to its settings. The body generates its perception of its environment through lived experiences that further create signals in the human mind to allow one to feel the state of existence and consciousness. These lived experiences result from sensorial engagement between the body and its environment (i.e. the space/place/building in which the body is present). It is not only the body’s work towards the felt sensations but also an equal contribution from the built environment that allows the generation of the sensations for the body to perceive and understand the space it is in. For the study, the built environment here is looked at as a case of step-wells (Vav) in Gujarat and the idea is to understand the sensorial engagement of the body with this historical monument. Therefore, the research study looks into these attributes of the built environment that ignite these sensations and articulate them to understand the architectural language of the built environment.
