Conserving historic buildings is essential to maintaining our cultural identity and historical continuity. However, there is a gap between how we currently conserve India’s historic buildings and what it actually needs. These methods mainly focus on saving buildings but don’t involve local communities, or everyday people in the process and sometimes also traditional knowledge system. The way conservation is practiced follows different charters and guidelines. . . . but do these really meet the needs of India’s historic buildings? Many of these guidelines focus on global standards from western countries, often overlooking India’s climate, traditional techniques, and local materials.
