Hotel interiors can create a spatial experience that can bring their context within its spaces. This research focuses on how that spatial experience is brought about by asking, “How context influences design?”. Such spatial experiences can be studied through the lenses of Replication, Curation and Interpretation of place and culture. Qualitative methods analyse the tangible aspects, including form, dimension, and finishes, whereas intangible aspects include the emotional response inhabitants have to their lived experience. The study context is Goa, a small state on the southwestern coast of India. Being under Portuguese rule for more than 400 years, it exhibits the influence of Portuguese culture and people, which is now ingrained in its context. The western ghats act as a barrier from the Deccan highlands, which defines this region in terms of its physical attributes such as the climate, geography and topography. Goa is one of the top tourist destinations which attracts international footfall, making it an ideal city to study the spatial experience created by context-informed hotel designs.
