As retail environments evolve beyond transactional spaces into experiential environments, consumer expectations are increasingly focused on memorable and immersive shopping experiences. This makes it necessary for interior designers to understand how material choices and material culture influences the curation of these environments. Thereby, this research investigates the dynamic interplay between material culture, material innovation, and experiential aspects of interiors aiming to uncover the key drivers and implications of this relationship. By examining case studies, design strategies, and review of existing literature, the study aims to provide insights into how designers leverage upcycling, natural materials, product materiality, traditional craftsmanship, and technological integration to foster material innovation. Principles and strategies interpreted through case studies provide insights on aligning innovation with material identity and consumer values to craft meaningful retail experiences. Ultimately, the research seeks to create a framework to analyze the intersection between materiality and retail design, highlighting sustainability and aesthetics as important driving factors behind innovative approaches which in turn shape the experience of retail spaces.
