Wastewater management challenges persist globally, notably in India, where rural areas rely on poorly maintained onsite sanitation systems, leading to groundwater contamination. The National Fecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) policy prompted Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to adopt FSSM frameworks and construct treatment plants. However, many operate below capacity due to inefficient management. In water-scarce areas like Kutch, Gujarat, implementing sewered networks is unfeasible. An Urban-Rural convergent plan proposes constructing or co-treating fecal sludge in identified villages, mitigating water contamination and enabling reuse for agricultural and municipal purposes. This offers a sustainable solution to wastewater management in the region.
