Traditional Indian cities were built on the principles of water security. In Ahmedabad, ponds, tanks (talavdis) were created to cater water supply demand and manage stormwater drainage. In the modern town planning mechanism, natural water systems such as lakes, streams and rivers etc. are paid attention to varying degrees. The water systems are encroached upon in the name of urban growth, affecting the water security of the city. Water sensitive planning provisions have been adapted by the case cities in their town planning mechanism. The study aims to mainstream water sensitive spatial planning in the case of Ahmedabad.
