During the 19th century, India experienced significant changes in its socio-cultural, economic, and political landscape, which profoundly impacted its built environment. Due to colonialism, and urbanization, the nation saw the development of new urban centers as well as the transformation of existing towns. Various interventions in architectural designs and urban planning techniques emerged in the colonial timeline which is reflected in the period’s convoluted social and cultural dynamics. This research targets to investigate the distinctive coherent built forms that took shape and emerged in the 19th century. The study focuses on the various urban design as well as urban planning principles which were a direct result of the changes in sociocultural, economic, and political developments happening across India. The idea is to examine the main characteristics of these built forms and the colonial urban scape using historical and architectural sources, such as primary and secondary literature, pictures, and on-site observations. It will also cover understanding the development regulations formed and their process of implementation.
