Ahmedabad’s exponential geographic and population growth has swallowed acres and acres of agricultural land along its way, transforming farmlands and vegetated open lands into urban neighbourhoods, with multiple clusters of gated communities, retail spaces, commercial buildings, and garden restaurants. This project aims to understand the processes that create unique urban conditions in peri-urban neighbourhoods of Indian cities, by focusing on the detailed study of one such prominent neighbourhood in Ahmedabad – Shela. It investigates the transformation of Shela, from a rural, farming settlement into a high-density, high-rise peri-urban area, in less than a decade.
