Kalaniketan - Innovation Center for Kutch Craftsmanship

The Innovation Center for Craftsmanship of Kutch is designed to serve as a platform that empowers local artisans and women by enhancing their business opportunities and fostering traditional crafts. Rooted in the vernacular architecture of Mandvi, a region renowned for its shipbuilding legacy, the center embodies the area’s unique timber materiality and craftsmanship. Reflecting the rich cultural and environmental context, the design prioritizes interactivity and natural ventilation, offering spaces that encourage community engagement and skill development. The building seamlessly integrates with its surroundings; a thoughtfully designed plinth merges with the ocean, strengthening the connection to both land and seascape. This innovative center not only preserves Kutch’s artisanal heritage but also creates a sustainable pathway for economic growth and empowerment within the community.
