THE SPINE

This project is about the walled city of Ahmedabad which has been declared as the ‘First Living Heritage City of India’ by UNESCO and thereby drawing the attention of Aga Khan to connect with this Islamic City. Here, I am playing a role as part of Government (chief architect) who will be interacting with client and taking important decisions.Site analysis brought into consideration a strong Axis of monuments from Bhadra fort to the Queen’s tomb. The only thing that separated this axis from river was a patch of land between bhadra fort and river which did not have any monuments. There is a bus stop on this location which floods people to old city. Hence this part was chosen as the site for Intervention. I am proposing a Museum to complete the Axis of Heritage Monuments. While observing the movement pattern one thing revealed that people coming from bus would go towards the bhadra plaza and people coming to the open space of riverfront would spend time there but rarely climb fort wall to explore the city. (Despite of having certain entrances through the wall to go up.) The idea here is to make a SPINE that connects eastern riverfront edge and AMTS bus stop so the space becomes active. The idea of connecting (the SPINE) lower and upper level of fort wall through steps provides Ahmedabadis with an amphitheater to carry out events on huge scale in same location instead of having it on different locations. This will also change the interaction of people with the wall and the city.
