WALLS AND BRIDGES - BERLIN WALL MUSEUM

The Berlin Wall divided Berlin into two parts, each governed by opposing political powers. This separation created not only a physical barrier but also a mental divide among the people. The Wall symbolized a void that distanced and separated individuals, communities, and ideologies. The design emphasized the chasm brought about by this division. Even though the wall was an obstacle people on both sides tried different ways to connect with those on the other side. They devised methods to communicate across the wall and even dug tunnels to escape from one side to the other. Walls and bridges were used in this design to symbolize these efforts to reconnect. The intersection of the wall and the bridge is emphasized through the use of a void, highlighting the tension between division and connection. The wall is represented as a solid element and the separation is highlighted using the void. The design consists of 4 ambulatories intertwining into each other at various levels. Different circular shafts act as pivots at different points and provide a vertical connection.
