In memory of the non- perennial

The project attempts at re-designing of an exisiting community (Sindhi) crematorium located near the Indira Bridge Ghat. The crematorium though located near the river has walled itslef from it and allows no physical or visual connections to the river. The disconnection,to me, was unlike any crematorium by the river and this is why the design sprawls itself towards the river bed respecting the topography it sits on, providing a liberating view of the river and beyond. The premises is guarded off from the adjacent road with a terrain that allows for the growth of prospus vegetation and a dry landscape. The design of the built forms, inspired from the immediate context represents objects that pop up from this untamed landscape just enough to provide a glimpse of its existence. Kunds, placed strategically allow to hold water after natural or artificial draining of the river, here festivals around the year, can be carried out without polluting the river water and also providing a specific space for such activities to occur. The intent of the proposal is to celebrate the memory of this beautiful landscape without making an effort to tame its existence.

the visulaization captures the essence of the project where the built forms are seen to be peeking out of the natural landscape as just mere objects lending its service to mankind. The kunds store the water after a high flood and allow for the temple and other activities to continue at the river bank.
