Legacy of Reuse:Conservation as Cultural & Environment

The revitalization plan includes the creation of a dedicated cycle track to encourage eco-friendly transportation through these narrow, often overlooked lanes. Along Balaram Majumdar Lane, place-making initiatives will transform the residential corridor into an inviting public space. Additionally, the project seeks to connect Banomali Sarkar and Hara Chandra Mullick Streets through a flea market, an open outlet spaces for the industrial workers to sell their products, drawing more people and enhancing the cultural energy of the area. An essential aspect of this project is the restoration of an old, decaying building with a tree growing through its facade. This unique structure will be preserved in phases, embracing both its natural and architectural heritage. The initial phase involves stabilizing the tree, allowing it to mature while monitoring the building’s structural health. After several decades, a second assessment will determine if retrofitting is possible; if so, the building will be strengthened for continued use. If not, it will be restored and repurposed as a café and homestay, providing a new social space while honoring its history. Together, these interventions will help Shobha Bazaar grow as a lively cultural and social hub. By blending conservation, sustainability, and innovative urban design, this project aims to bring locals and visitors together to celebrate the unique heritage and vibrant spirit of these historic streets
