Carvature- A Place For Veena Makers

Carvature- A symphony of the act of carving and curvilinear geometry; the design strives to provide a sense of belonging to the veena makers, while also becoming a latent symbol of this craft. The “carving out” or “scooping out” of spaces implies uncertainty in the size of the space as well as the depth, which makes for unique spaces and interesting junctions.

Iterations of the design were done through sketches and models. A month-long journey of exploration, trial and error and learning later, we designed our pavilion. Plans, Section and Axonometric view of the Pavillion.

To delve into this fine craft of veena making, we went for a site visit to Tanjore where we explored various veena making workshops and conversed with the workers to understand all the processes involved in making the veena. We also visited some of the historic temples like Brihadeswara and Chidambaram temples to understand massing, play of light and structure in dravidian temples, an inspiration for a hint of site reflection in our design.

As a beginning to design a place for veena makers, Massing models out of styrofoam and wax models, moulded to and carved to create spaces.

Floor Plan

Within the design, “crafting” of spaces is achieved through detailing out the objects and the interactions of these particular spaces. Hence, Some spaces were meticulously chosen and detailed out using the different activities that might occur in the space. This also gave an opportunity to look into the materiality of the design, the play of light and shadow, and the functional potential of a space.
