Re-imagining Water Systems

The disparity between man and nature has been growing over a period of time with the increased pressure of urbanization. It has pushed nature to the outskirts, making the core a jungle of concrete. This unplanned growth over and beyond the fringes, has led to poor infrastructure development of the city. Once what used to be impenetrable jungles have now become a series of fragmented greens. There is an urgent need to update the city’s infrastructure so that it becomes a better place to live in. My objective would be to study and understand one such area in the fringes, while focusing on its catchment area. The intent would be to connect the green spaces and waterbodies around the catchment, using green- blue infrastructure, such that all the water drainage is properly managed. Now, most of the water disappears into Sabarmati, instead of feeding the lake, which is why the lake remains dry most of the time. The water would be treated such that it can feed the city back by increasing the water table level as well as channelizing the storm water drainage to the lake. While redefining the water usage on the larger scale, it has to be ensured that the water that is feeding to the lake has to be cleaned beforehand in order to enrich the biodiversity of the place. The larger idea will be demonstrated in a small area that can be then replicated throughout the area in a similar manner.
