ARAKSA - Preserving the lateritic plateau

Madayipara is a plateau in Kannur District, Kerala, known for its temples, historical significance, and diverse vegetation. The plateau has an altitude range of 40-47m and is home to several perennial ponds. The area experiences seasonal changes with the color of the land changing from green to golden brown during flowering. The plateau has a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare plant species. Madayipara is also the only source of drinking water for the nearby village during the summer months. Despite its small size, the plateau supports a significant proportion of the flora of Kannur District. Madayipara is in danger of being seriously damaged due to years of degradation. The rich deposits of china clay and lignite on the plateau led to mining by the Kerala Clays and Ceramic Products Ltd. KCCPL, and their mining activities have now spread to the Shiva temple and Lake, posing a major threat to the ecosystem. Past mining has heavily disturbed the water table and animals in the area. Additionally, much of the midland hillocks have been converted to plantations and building sites, leading to high pollution levels from various sources such as vehicles, household garbage, and tourism. As a result, Madayipara is a valuable conservation area that needs protection.
