Bet Oasis: Greening the Desert Isle

The dry desert bet (island) situated at the Indo-Pakistan border faces multiple challenges, including neglect and degradation despite its ecological significance. Adjacent to this bet lies a wetland of international importance, frequented by migratory birds, accentuating the need for effective conservation measures. The invasion of Prosopis Juliflora has led to the degradation of grasslands on the bet, threatening the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Furthermore, the bet has recently garnered attention as a tourist destination for “Seema darshan,” adding pressure on its fragile environment. Additionally, during the monsoon season, the bet serves as the sole resting site for wild ass and other desert species, underscoring its critical role in supporting desert biodiversity. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive conservation strategies that prioritize the restoration of grasslands, mitigation of invasive species, sustainable tourism management, and the protection of vital habitats for migratory birds and desert wildlife.
