Bengaluru, recognized as one of the rapidly expanding cities in Asia, is witnessing a surge in urbanization that poses a significant threat to its natural biodiversity. The wildlife and their habitats endure mounting pressures as their living spaces rapidly diminish, face disruptions, fragmentation, and encounter persecution from various sources. This peril extends to the Hesarghatta grassland and lake, a distinctive ecosystem representing the last vestige of native grasslands in Bengaluru. Established as a reservoir in 1893, Hesarghatta Lake was once the primary drinking water source for Bengaluru until the 1990s. However, the once-vital Arkavathy river, which nourished the lake, now languishes depleted, relying solely on sporadic monsoon rains for replenishment. This proposal advocates for the conservation of the delicate ecosystems encompassing Hesarghatta Lake of around 5000acres. It seeks to raise awareness among the populace regarding the profound significance of this fragile ecosystem, urging them to understand and respect its value. Through collective efforts and sustainable solutions, the aim is to ensure the conservation and vitality of Hesarghatta’s natural treasures for generations to come.
