Pirambet Island, off the Gujarat coast in the Gulf of Khambhat, is a unique ecological and geological sanctuary facing rapid ecological decline. Once home to dry tropical forests and now featuring mudflats, a freshwater lake, and rich fossil beds from the Miocene and Paleocene epochs, the island supports diverse flora and fauna, including migratory birds and marine life. However, high erosion caused by the spread of Prosopis juliflora on the island’s mainland and the overcutting of mangrove edges has increased sedimentation, leading to the expansion of mudflat areas over time and negatively affecting the life and diversity of native flora and fauna. This project aims to revive the island by enhancing its ecological value, creating food, shelter, and economic opportunities for all living beings of the ecosystem, including humans. Restoration efforts will focus on regenerating native habitats, stabilizing shorelines, and fostering sustainable coexistence between nature and local communities.
