Shankar Bhuvan is an informal settlement situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Geographically, it occupies the center of Ahmedabad, the most prime location for any city-level infrastructure to pitch in, leaving its residents to face a constant threat of eviction. The community has a variety of people following different cultures and most of them immigrated here years back, all from different walks of life. The studio focuses on understanding the nature of the public spaces here, studying the social backgrounds of its residents, analyzing their use of space and all the spatial activities around the same and eventually recognizing one concern and responding to that through architecture; all via community interaction. While doing so, one also had to keep in mind that this community is at present also facing eviction; hundred of houses have already been demolished to accommodate the city’s larger dream, the emerging metro line.
