Housing for Workers in Ahmedabad East

Ahmedabad East has several small scale industries which continue to exist after the shifting and closing of large scale mills. These industries continue to attract workers from various regions seeking work and livelyhood opportunities. This project explores the possibility of creating housing for such industrial workers which is located within the industrial zone. The project explores the possibility of creating an affordable rental housing scheme for industrial workers enabled by both housing policy schemes and industrial philanthropy. To this extent prefabricated construction system is used as a design tool to ensure streamlining of construction process as well as to increase adaptibility of the building. At the site level, it is proposed that the project will take an incremental approach to achieve a larger density, but only over a span of 10 to 15 years, which is a typical time span for a planning phase in most cities. This method allows for smaller amounts of money to be invested, and more importantly to also test the viability of the project based on both projected as well as actual demand for rental housing for industrial workers. The building as well as units are designed keeping in mind the various sizes and configurations of households: dormitories, couple, a family, etc.
