Redevelopment of Railway colony, Ahmedabad East

Railway lands and colonies are typically under utilized. Yet, at the same time, this underutilized aspect of these sites also has allowed them to be green pockets in the city, characterized by thick and dense vegetation. This project tries to explore the idea of utilizing the underutilized railway lands to increase the supply of rental housing in the city, providing housing for the railway employees, while retaining the lush green character of these sites. Since a typical railways estate has a estate management office, it can act as a management office for the rental housing component as well. Since the nature and demand of rental housing can vary over time, and also the demand for various cadres and ranks of employees varies over time, the project is imagined as flexible and adaptable system to accommodate varying demands of space. Lastly, as many of these sites are close to railway tracks, the buildings will be detailed to have specifications that reduce and cut off the noise pollution along the railways tracks and the city edges, and increase the openness towards the courtyard gardens
