Shah E Alam Basti Slum Rehabilitation Project

There are also slums in cities that belong with charitable organizations or community organizations, which need not operate with the a typical framework of cross-subsity or trading of FSI and development rights. In such situations other ways of engaging with slums can be thought about, like that of in-situ slum upgradation. Using close reading methods of diagnostic survey it is possible to both closely map the settlement and the households. Strategic and incremental ideas can be thought to improve the condition of the settlement over time. At the same time, underutilized or neglected parts of the site can be reconfigured to imprive the overall livability of the site, while also potentially opening up land for new houses to be added to the site. The charitable organizations, with help of CSR funds, NGOs, and along with the help of several housing schemes and policies at both the state and the national level, can help fund the project. For this project, where the site is owned by the Waqf Board, the design strategy is reconstruct homes on the existing footprints with small adjustments that would help in improving site ciruclation, size of each of the houses, as well as other shared spaces. The pond which was treated as a dump yard, will be reonfugured to open up new community space as well as add more housees to the settlement.
