Four gables

The foundation studio in architecture tectonics (MAAT) aims to set up a disciplinary impetus for the program with considerable emphasis on the method of design and making. The first exercise deals with imparting awareness of mechanisms, mechanical motions and their translations. The developed workshop skills are utilised to produce a mechanically controlled fenestration unit. The second part of the studio deals with the understanding of structural forces and their articulation in form. This is induced through active physical modelling. The third and final part deals with the consolidation of the above acquired skills, their resolution and their layering with a given design challenge. The skills are tested through three emerging typologies in a high rise, keeping in mind the future of resource crunch, land shortages and sustainability.
