Basics of Conservation

The semester began with documentation of a pol house in Sheth ni Pol, Ahmedabad. Through this, we were able to learn the basics of documentation and measured drawing. Module 2 focused on understanding traditional building materials, how they function and their conditions on-site. This involved several laboratory tests on materials such as brick, mud, lime and sand. Finally, module 3 was a culmination of learnings from module 1 and 2. Study on the articulation, symbolism and cultural expression of pol houses was the centre of module 3. The façade becomes an element of the street. Through this, it is possible to even track the age of the building i.e. age of the wood and the stories which are depicted. Thus, this attribute adds value to pol houses in terms of history, lineage and craftsmanship. Foundation studio was intended to set a solid base for architectural conservation.
