The Water & the Walls: A Place for Reflection

Located facing the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad, the city library acts as a living dialogue between the past and the present, embodying a sense of timelessness. Inspired by Neil Levine’s ideas of ambiguity, potentiality, incompleteness, and openness, the design focuses on the concept of ambiguity, as highlighted by Cedric Price’s notion of a certain “delight in the unknown.”
The design juxtaposes two contrasting forms: a sphere and a fragmentation of walls. The library serves as a welcoming public space, with parallel walls that open to the city, while low walls guide visitors on a journey through books. A ramp leads to an ambiguous rotunda, offering a space for reading and rumination, with views of the Sabarmati River.
