Institutional Architecture in Twentieth Century Ahmedabad
This essay examines the ordering principles of an institution’s façade, as a means to better understand the changing nature of institutions in the city, from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1980’s. It documents the facades of key institutional buildings along three stretches in the city of Ahmedabad, Mirzapur Road in the historic walled city, Ashram Road, located along the banks of the River Sabarmati, and Chimanlal Girdharlal Road, the city’s financial hub, to identify the societal values that these buildings embody.
