Urban Angaadi : Reimagining a traditional marketplace

Urban Angaadi reimagines the local marketplace and fair ground as a vibrant, inclusive space. Located along side the Calicut Trade Centre that combines the lively spirit of a Kerala marketplace with the flexibility of modern design. Situated in Kottooli, an ecologically rich area of Calicut, the project is surrounded by the Korapuzha and Kallayi rivers, connected by the historic Conolly Canal. This canal supports the Kottooli wetland, Calicut’s largest green area, creating a habitat that sustains diverse plants and animals while acting as a crucial ecological buffer. Inspired by Kerala’s traditional “angaadis,” or local markets. The project transforms the idea of a marketplace into a welcoming, open-air space for artisans, entrepreneurs, and community gatherings. Spanning 10.8 acres, this “Shared Ground” is designed for a variety of year-round events, from fairs and cultural festivals to exhibitions and informal meetings. The project honors both Calicut’s heritage and natural environment, fostering a vibrant community hub that supports local biodiversity and celebrates Kerala’s rich culture.
