Signs of Memory - A Semiotic Study of Memorials in Delhi

Within the field of Semiotics of Architecture, this study focuses on memorials. While the intention is to understand the creation of meaning through architectural elements in memorials of Lutyens’ Delhi, the scope is limited to built spaces in the public domain that commemorate events or tragedies. The specific sites I have chosen for the study are National War Memorial, India Gate, and National Police Memorial. These sites will be analysed in terms of their architectural features, using the existing framework of semiotics in architecture. This project aims to bring to the forefront that the perception of memorials is directly affected by the signification of architectural features. It studies how this signification can result in experiences which convey particular emotions by creating meaning.
