Rethinking Lost Space

The urban space is seldom thought as an exterior volume with properties of shape and scale and with connections to other spaces. This results in the creation of Lost Spaces – spaces which are leftover and unstructured, anti-spaces making no positive contribution to the surroundings. One such lost space is located at the center of Rajkot, Gujarat. Two huge overhead water tanks supported by five stories of a regular concrete column beam grid are situated in the Jubeli Garden, surrounded by a historically rich and dynamic urban fabric. The intent was to redefine the residual space of the tank such that it can contribute to the urban setting and become a part of it. By doing so, the project would not only reclaim the lost space but would also act as a beacon that would remind people of many such lost spaces in the city and thereby question the objective and self-centric conception of such spaces.
