The island of Diu off the coast of Gujarat, India was a hub for the trade of spices, textiles, and pearls in the 16th century. The Portuguese merchants recognized the value of the high-quality pearls found in the oysters abundant in the waters surrounding the island and established a thriving trade with local fishermen. The Diu fort was built by the Portuguese to protect their trading interests in the region and played a critical role in the defense of the island. Today, the legacy of this trade can still be seen in the architecture of the fort and the cultural significance of pearls in the region. The Indian government has been promoting pearl cultivation as an alternate source of income for farmers, and a Pearl cultivation learning and training center at Diu fort can be an appropriate intervention that will educate people, generate income, and make Diu famous for its fine pearls both nationally and internationally. The lighting concept aims to showcase the elegance and sophistication of pearls through iridescent and lustrous materials while creating an atmosphere of intrigue and fondness around the history of pearl trading and pearling in Diu and the ancient Diu Fort. The design strategy of incorporating industrial materials creates a clear visual distinction between the original historical elements and the new modern additions, reflecting an honest approach to representing the interiors of today's time. The aim is to create a dynamic and visually engaging interior space that reflects both the history and contemporary context of the building. The industrial language also complements the proposed use of the space to promote the industry of Pearl cultivation in Diu.
