Choti Chaupar: Echoes of Hidden Karkhanas

This project involves designing a metro station beneath Choti Chaupar in Jaipur, focusing on integrating modern infrastructure while celebrating the region’s rich craft heritage. The intervention aims to create an underground space that echoes the vibrant essence of the surrounding marketplace and cultural fabric. The station design is conceptualized as a network of mahollas (community clusters) that blend circulation, craft engagement, and functional spaces. Shops are positioned along peripheries for visibility and accessibility, while workshops are central, showcasing live craft-making processes. Diagonal voids and atriums ensure visual connections between levels, allowing natural light and spatial openness to enhance the user experience. The project envisions the metro as a catalyst for economic and cultural exchange, linking underground transit functions with activities that support artisans and engage both locals and tourists. Spaces for amenities, workshops, and exhibitions foster a dialogue between the city’s traditional crafts and modern urban life, ensuring a seamless integration of heritage and utility.
