Retroactive Housing

Focusing on repairs, retrofits, and refurbishments, the studio extends the idea of conservation to everyday-built form, which is in constant need for maintenance. To demonstrate that the studio addresses the everyday issues in historic housing stock that faces vulnerabilities of aging, material deterioration, shifting climate patterns, and residents’ aspirations, and technological upgrades. Further, studies have revealed that the housing shortage is not so much a result of lack of availability but rather because people do not want to move from their own places. This might be because of affordability, time, resources, and overall sense of belongingness in a city. Keeping these realities in mind mind, the studio questions and reflects on the nature and urgency of conservation approach to address housing stress. For this, the studio studies four basic types of required interventions in historic housing.
